Dear Prime Minister:

People are pretty smart. If hundreds of thousands of them are convinced the Tar Sands Supertanker plan is bad; they may know something you have missed. What are the things you care about? Respect for our communities? our cultures ? And surely healthy nutritious food for our families?

Here are reasons to say no to shipping bitumen by tankers out from Kitimat or Prince Rupert at the mouth of the Skeena and past Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlottes):

The First Nations in this region say no.

There is a cultural resurgence on the north coast. The lack of treaties is a reality. The First Nations have a right to say no to issues critical to them and there is a broad respect of this position across the region and across cultures.

The seafood from this region is irreplaceable

Alberta beef is great. We love it. But doctors recommend two servings of oily fish per week.

Check with your own doctor; many are specifying wild salmon not farmed.

The world supply of seafood is already limited. We can’t afford to contaminate another vast area. The seafood from the Gulf of Mexico and waters near Japan is needed by the people who live there and now much of it has high levels of toxins.

The ocean is a timeless bounty of wealth

Our ocean isn’t dying. The thousands marching in Prince Rupert know how rich the pristine northern waters are. Millions of salmon are harvested; each one providing many nutritious meals. Millions more go on to spawn. In the summer Hecate Strait is thick with life: krill, plankton, clams, seaweed, crabs, humpbacks, halibut…. If we protect it from oil spills it will go on creating real wealth long after the tar sands are gone.

Please reconsider. We want to be left in peace.

Make the supertanker ban permanent.

Sincerely,
